SOFIA Stargazing Education Outreach Event
The Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) Mission has a reconfigured 747 jumbo jet airplane with the most modern of telescopes in the back end of the plane. It will fly at an altitude of 40,000 ft., well above the clouds, and can stay focused on a celestial target for hours. On September 15, 2015, Nichelle Nichols (Lt./Commander Uhura of the Starship Enterprise on Star Trek) will fly on the SOFIA Stargazing flight from California to the east coast (Nova Scotia, Canada) and back to California. It will be an 11-hour flight, with refueling in flight. During the flight, Nichelle Nichols will point the telescope in a star birthing area of the universe and answer questions submitted by students. The DC/MD/VA Chapter of SHADES OF BLUE is co-sponsoring a SOFIA Stargazing Education Outreach Event with science, aviation, and Trekker presentations for families preceding the stargazing flight (that starts at 10:30 pm. east coast time). The presentations will be followed by communications between Nichelle Nichols and students during the SOFIA flight. Students are encouraged to submit their questions ahead of time, with their name, age, and location. This event is being co-sponsored with Science, Mathematics, Aerospace, Research, and Technology (S.M.A.R.T.), Inc., which has been sponsoring similar Family Night Programs for special astronomical events for many years.

Annual Gala Dinner at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science
As our current aerospace and aviation workforce ages and retires, our country is headed for a severe deficit of American professionals to continue our future aviation, space and other scientific programs. If we desire to continue to lead the world in this area, America needs more students in the fields of aviation and aerospace: engineers, astronauts, pilots, educators, scientists, mathematicians, and fields of medicine. By getting our youngsters involved in their own futures early in their school years, they are given alternatives to the drug and gang infested lifestyles too common in many neighborhoods. To this end, our organization needs your support and good will, and your financial assistance in providing these alternatives. We cannot do it all by ourselves! We cannot -we will not - forget our children! The Shades of Blue organization and its loyal sponsors will host the 2014 Annual Gala Dinner at Denver’s Museum of Nature & Science, 2001 Colorado Blvd., Denver. CO. This museum is one of only 750 out of a total of 16,000 museums nationwide to be awarded accreditation by the American Association of Museums. This Event, set in the beautiful atrium of the Museum, takes place on September 20th, 2014. At the dinner ceremony, as in the past, we will appropriately honor educators and members of the scientific and aero-space communities ( e.g. pilots, astronauts, corporate officials, and Shades of Blue members) for their demonstrated ex-ceptional support to students during the past year. This year’s Honored Guest is a BIG SURPRISE , to be honored for his contribution to the education of Denver’s school students. During this special fun-filled and informative night, the Museum will open several displays and “hands-on” unique scientific and historical exhibits to those who attend. “Kids” from six to a hundred will be able to fulfill their “astronaut” dreams and tour this exciting collection nature and space oriented exhibits. Doors will open at 6:00 pm allowing time to visit many of the hands-on educational exhibits loved by students and adults alike. Our 2014 SHADES OF BLUE Ed Dwight Jr. Awards and Corporate Recognition Awards follow dinner. The evening will conclude at 10:00 pm. Tickets are just $125 per person for all this! Corporations may purchase any one of several levels of support, reserving full tables for their employees and executives, and participating in the underwriting of our event. Shades of Blue will publically acknowledge Corporate Sponsors for their support, adding to their corporate pride of doing what is needed, at a time when it is desperately needed. Rates are on the accompanying RSVP flyer. Please join us. Your valued investment in time and resources is essential in helping us maintain America’s current and future lead in aerospace and aviation. Together we will assure that our students will be ready to assume leadership in the most critical tough, demanding, and rewarding fields well into the 21st century. After all, it is OUR future we hold in our hands. We will have 20 active students and Air Force Academy Cadets attending as our guests. If you cannot attend, please consider sponsoring these honored invitees. Your contribution of $125 per dinner will cover these costs. Perhaps you could sponsor several? Just look around you. Just look! THEY are our children. THEY are our future. THEY need our help. America needs their help. We hope you join us as a Co-op Sponsor and supporter. Please contact us for additional information and reservations. Sincerely, Willie Daniels, II Founder, President (303) 549-6204

Wings Over the Rockies Gala- Tuskegee Airmen
On Saturday Nov 19 the Wings Over the Rockies Museum with support from Shades of Blue honored the Tuskegee Airmen for their incredibly bold and inspirational contributions to the culture of aviation and to our country. Joining this special event were Governor John Hickenlooper, Mayor Michael Hancock, CEO of Ball Aerospace Dave Taylor, the producer of the movie "Red Tails" Charles Johnson, and the Master of Ceremonies Amelia Earhart . There were also personal video tributes from President Obama, a video from pilot John Travolta, another from NASA Administrator Charles Bolden Jr. and also one from the daughter of a Tuskegee Airmen, news anchor Robin Roberts. Nine young Tuskegee re-enactors sauntered through the crowd, wearing authentic flight suits, leather jackets, it was as if the actual Tuskegee airmen had gone back in time, back to their glory days, back to the days when they were altering the course of history. These young men are all pilots or student pilots and are representatives of the Colorado Chapter`s Mile High Program and the Shades of Blue organization, both of whom conduct programs in partnership with Wings Over the Rockies.

The honored Tuskegee airmen were Aviation Cadet Randy Edwards, LtCol James Harvey III, Capt Samuel Hunter, Jr., 2nd Lt Franklin Macon, Corporal Henry Moore, LtCol John Mosley Jr., Col Buck Newsum, LtCol Marion Rodgers and Col Charles McGee.

Shades of Blue Visits with the Raytheon Aurora Employee Resource Groups
RAYBEN hosted the Shades of Blue President, Willie Daniels, and Executive Director, Adrian Clark, for a visit with the Raytheon ERG Presidents and Executive Directors to discuss opportunities to engage school students, by illustrating the connection between math and science at the workplace.

Shades of Blue have been reaching out to elementary, middle, and secondary school students to spark interest in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) and also assisting in the education and training of our youth to become the next generation of aviation and aerospace professionals.

While speaking at the Aurora Public Schools, whose diversity make up is 50% Hispanic, 25% Caucasian, 20% Black and 5% mix of Asian and Native American, Shades of Blue discovered that the majority of students have never heard of Raytheon and the ones that have heard of the company do not know what it does. Raytheon is largest employer in Aurora and our students do not know us.

Shades of Blue has offered to support Raytheon to get the word out and have the ERG organizations go to the schools to show off Raytheon, give a road show, be a role model, tell the students what it takes to be an engineer, discuss opportunities and show off the diversity within Raytheon.

As a national sponsor of MATHCOUNTS and a creator of its own MathMoveU program, Raytheon is committed to reversing the trend around the nations decline of math and science skills. In order to help our company meet this goal, RAYBEN (Raytheon Black Employees Network) will continue to support Shades of Blue in getting tomorrow`s engineers and technologists excited by and interested in math today. We will engage school students by illustrating the connection between math and science, their passions and interests and "cool" careers. We are asking that the other ERG`s consider joining RAYBEN in this support.

Experience Aviation with Barrington Irving - Denver and Aurora Public Schools
Wings Over Rockies Museum hosted `Experience Aviation with Barrington Irving` for the Denver and Aurora Public Schools on October 8th and 9th. Over 500 middle school students from Aurora Public Schools gathered at the

Wings Over the Rockies Museum on Tuesday October 9 to take part in various

Aviation Experiences, such as, Build and Fly a Glider, Climb into an

Aircraft Cockpit, Learn About World Record Kites, Learn About the Air

Force Academy, Meet the Tuskegee Airmen, Take a Flight in our

Simulators, Test the Wright Flyer, and Discover Careers in Aviation.

But the biggest thrill was greeting and talking to Barrington Irving as he

deplaned from a helicopter landing in the parking lot. On March 23, 2007,

Barrington Irving a 23-year old senior majoring in aerospace at Florida

Memorial University, climbed into a single-engine plane called

Inspiration and embarked on a 26,800-mile, round-the-world flight. When

he returned to Miami on June 27th, he was celebrated for setting two world

records: he is the first person of African descent and the youngest person

ever to fly solo around the globe. Born in Kingston, Jamaica, and raised

in inner-city Miami, Irving explained how he hopes his historic flight will

inspire other young people to resist the negative influences of the streets

and work toward their dreams. Go to the following link for photos:
